Story of the Eye

Story of the Eye

Video, 9:30minutes, 2005

This video fragments the narrative of George Bataille’s Story of the Eye into isolated scenes. This video project, also titled Story of the Eye uses George Bataille’s novel to initiate a dialogue concerning the creator/actor and camera, or more specifically the project concerns the struggle of framing one’s self in the shot while still maintaining operation of the camera. In a typical film the camera is not human; it exits solely as a documentation device. This manner of camera operation present in this video creates a stronger relationship between the character in the story and the audience than would exist in typical film. The camera becomes human, moves like an eye, occasionally retrieves back into the mind, and displays images of what one knows but does not see.
